Snow from my yard

Snow from my yard

I crack myself up! OK–so here’s what happened. Yesterday morning I woke up to no water in my house. Nothing! Dead space between the faucet and my tea pot. I went around to all the faucets thinking there is probably something wrong with the kitchen faucet. Surprise–NO WATER. It was a really strange feeling. I kept turning the knobs and nothing would happen. It was like a dream. But the interesting part was the feeling that I had. It was a sensation of not hearing the water come out of the faucets. Not feeling the movement of the water going into the tea pot.  In that moment I was more connected to that feeling sensation than the fact that there was actually no water in my house. So I stood at my kitchen sink looking out at the snow and feeling the chill that I knew was outside with minus 18 degree wind chill. In that moment I thought there is all this pristine snow around me so why don’t I just use it for my tea. First things first, I thought and proceeded to walk out the door in pajamas, slippers and a small pot to melt the “tea snow”. If I didn’t do this I would have never known how much snow you actually need for a 4 cup pot of tea. Much more than I gathered. But at least I now have this knowledge. While my “tea snow” was melting on the stove I put on warmer clothes and went back out with a plastic tub to fill it with more snow. Is this what is called “survival?” I know this is not life or death but it did feel good to think of this and then do it.

Here I am almost two days without running water. I used a camping solar shower this morning to wash. My System: Get up, collect snow, simmering on stove to melt it,  pour into shower bag. Make sure there is enough water to get the soap off those delicate parts.

Called the Suffolk county emergency phone line. My landlord told me he called them yesterday and left a message to report the problem. I was only on hold for about 10 minutes when a woman answers and says that there was no emergency call about a broken water pipe at my address. I say “well they said they left a message.” She then deadpans saying “That would be like calling the Federal Govt. to say Hello and think you would get a return phone call.”  We laughed and she said “I could lie to you and say -don’t worry someone will be there tonight but I won’t do that. I hope to have someone there by tomorrow.

This has not been an awful experience. It makes me appreciate the heat in my home, the food that I can cook with melted snow and that Stop and Shop is less than a mile from my home to purchase anything I want including bottled water.  I think about people that need to rely on collecting wood and water for their survival. Not just a camping weekend but everyday existence.  I am grateful for this opportunity to gather snow along with my thoughts while sipping tea that was brewed from pristine snow from my yard. It is now snowing again and I went out to collect the top layer so I won’t have to strain the pine needles out of it when I make some rice for dinner. Although, being an herbalist I know that pine needle tea is very soothing and calming.

Happy Winter!
